May TBR

May is coming up and I am 22 books behind schedule for my reading goal of 100 books this year. I try not to push myself because I do have three kids and we homeschool so I don’t have as much time as I wish to read. These are the books I want to read this month.

Bloom into You vol. 1

This is a manga/graphic novel about Yuu who loves shoujo manga and wants a butterfly love only to find that when a boy in her class does confess his feelings to her, she doesn’t feel anything. In high school she gets another confession but this time it’s from a girl and she wonders if this is what she’s been waiting for.

I have always enjoyed manga and it’s really cool to see that there are more and more LGBTQ ones coming out. I am pansexual/demi so any literature involving relationships outside of hetero relationships I am willing to read. This series is recommended for 13+ and is by Nakatani Nio.

Killers of the Flower Moon

In the 1920s the Osage Nation in Oklahoma was well off because of the rich oil on their land and suddenly, one by one they began to be killed. The FBI got involved as the death toll rose, and along with Native American agents uncovered conspiracies and the causes behind the deaths.

This one has been turned into a movie, I haven’t seen it because I wanted to read the book and do my research on the events before watching the movie. I think conversations and the intake of media around people of color, indigenous tribes and native Americans is super important and needs to involve a level of research, critical thinking and self awareness and empathy. For me, personally, I want to form educated opinions on things like this. It’s written by David Gram, I am currently unsure if he was involved in the fil
ming or writing of the film.

Nordic Tales: Folktales from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, and Denmark

Nordic tales is a collection of 16 traditional stories from Scandinavian folklore.

I’ve actually begun to read this one and I’ve read some to my kids and so far it’s quite interesting. The stories do not stray from gruesome or hard trials as a lot of modern American tales do. My ancestry is almost all Scandinavian. It’s always fun to read tales from Norway and Ireland because of this. It’s one that I alway enjoy reading with my kids.

Beltane

This is a part of Llewelyns wheel of the year series. While I’m not Wiccan I do enjoy learning about the solstices and pagan holidays. Beltane is today and the second one I’m participating in since my spirituality changed. It was cute and informative but I felt there wasn’t enough helpful information beyond a beginner level.

The Invention of Murder

Murder in the 19th century was rare. Butmurder as sensation and entertainment became ubiquitous.

I have wanted to read this book for so long and a friend let me borrow it so I’m looking forward to reading  it. It’s all about how murder started to be investigated and looked at within society and it goes into different murders through the years. It’s written by Judith Flanders, I don’t know anything about her writing so this will be my introduction to her.

Air Magic

This is another Llewellyn series. This time we are centered around the elements. This book is about the air element and how to work with it. I’ve read multiple of Astrea Taylor’s  writing and I find that she is quite informative and does a good job of not being offensive to closed practices. This is a reread for me and I do enjoy this book, I find it quite helpful.

The Apothecary Diaries

Maomao a young woman trained in the art of herbal medicine, is forced to work as a lowly servant in the inner palace.

I have seen and heard a lot about this anime and manga. I’m a weeb so of course I wanted to see what the hype was about. I like to read series before watching though so I understand them better. The plot seems fun and I’ve never read anything by Natsu Hyuuga either so I’m looking forward to that.

That’s all for this month. I’m not sure that I’ll be able to read them all because, kids but at least two or three of them I’m sure I can get through. What are you reading?

Much love,

M
